Insilico - Mat Collishaw

Verket Insilico är en undersökning av näthat. Hjorten styrs helt av intensiteten i digitala hatflöden i realtid på Twitter (numera profilerad som X). Analytiker av åsikts- och hatpropaganda har specialdesignat mjukvaran för att undersöka vem som för tillfället är Twitterplattformens mest utsatta person. Hjorten reagerar som en följd av detta.
Om konstnären
Mat Collishaw (f. 1966) är en av Storbritanniens centrala konstnärer med en 30 år lång och internationell karriär bakom sig. Han slog igenom i slutet av 1980-talet och tillhör generationen ”Young British Artists”, vilka formades på Goldsmiths’ College. Som en av 16 konstnärer deltog han i Freize omtalade utställning, organiserad av Damien Hirst 1988 och ställde även ut i den omdebatterade utställningen Sensation 1997.
Genom visuellt och teknologiskt intrikata verk har Mat Collishaw fortsatt att fascinera. På senare tid har han exempelvis ställt ut i Sydkorea, Spanien, Dubai och Belgien och under hösten är han bland annat aktuell med utställning på Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew Gardens i London.
Psykologiska aspekter av teknologi
Mat Collishaw intresserar sig speciellt för psykologiska aspekter av samtida teknologi, hur sömlös digital manipulation dröjer sig kvar i medvetandet. Liksom i flera andra verk av konstnären har Insilico en naturlyrisk ådra, vilken får detta animatroniskt styrda metalldjur att utstråla en särskild existentiell ångest i sin utsatthet.

A life sized animatronic stag in Insilico slips, slides and falls depending on the intensity of abuse directed at selected individuals on Twitter, currently rebranding to x. The works will be on show October 19th-December 10th.
Sentiment and hate speech analysts designed a software to trawl twitter to establish who is the most abused person on the platform. The software then rates the incoming tweets depending on the intensity of the abuse. This data is fed to the mechanisms which determine the movements of the animatronic Stag.
About the artist
Mat Collishaw (b. 1966) is one of the most significant and compelling artists in contemporary British art, with a 30-year career ahead. With an early foundation at Goldsmiths College, Collishaw formed part of the legendary movement of Young British Artists. He was one of 16 young artists who participated in the seminal Frieze exhibition organised by Damien Hirst in 1988 as well as the provocative Sensation show of 1997.
Through optical illusions and, technically advanced works, the artist creates scenarios that directly and unconsciously engage their viewers. Lately he has for instance exhibited in South Korea, Spain, Dubai and Belgium. During the autumn the solo exhibition at Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew Gardens in London will premier.
Behavioral aspects of technology
The works encourage us to think about fundamental questions of psychology, sociology and science. Behind the richness and visual appeal of each work there is a deep exploration of how we perceive and are influenced by the world today through images, and modern technology. Questions regarding behavioral manipulation, programming, temporal reality all linger in the viewing experience.
