About Anna Odell
Few artists have delved into the subject of Swedish psychiatry as Anna Odell. Her graduation work Unknown, woman 2009-349701 (2009) created a big debate within the art world and the field of psychiatry. The artwork also opened the door to an international film career with her directorial debut The Reunion (2013).
Anna Odell was born in 1973 and currently lives in Stockholm. The film, Unknown, woman 2009-349701 (2009), was the artist’s BA-graduation work at Konstfack. The artwork was a staging of her own experience with compulsory psychiatric care. She completed her master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2012.
Anna Odell’s directorial debut came in 2013 with The Reunion, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The film was awarded the FIPRESCI-prize for best debut film and received an honorable mention by the European film critics association FEDEORA. The film was also awarded two Guldbagge Awards for best film and best screenplay in 2014. The feature film X&Y premiered in 2018.
Rekonstruktion – Psyket has been shown at Cecilia Hillström Gallery (2024). Anna Odell has also had solo exhibitions at Gothenburg Film Festival (2020), Skellefteå Konsthall and Hälsingland Museum (2016) and Kulturhuset, Stockholm (2015).
