Sweden and Finland have a shared history. For hundreds of years, they were one and the same country. The split in 1809, and the liberation from Russia in 1917 made an independent Finland possible. 2017 marks the centenary of the independence.

Uppsala Art Museum celebrates the centenary of Finland’s independence by presenting five strong and independent Finnish artists. Five artists who work with different techniques, and a variety of formats, temperaments and expressions, but who have one thing in common that makes it possible for them to meet; a relationship with nature – luonto.

The Finnish language is central to Finnish independence, but is also a part of Swedish culture, which is why the exhibition has been named Itsenäisyys.
