Tobias Bradford – Imposter machine

In an interactive sculpture, Tobias Bradford explores the relationship between man and machine. A robot that observes its surroundings, draws and doubts. The work has been developed in collaboration with students at the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University, in dialogue with Akademiska Hus and the Swedish National Arts Council.

Bradford has trained a local AI model with his own drawings and movements, so that it can work in a way that resembles an artistic process. As a visitor, you can follow how the robot collects impressions and sometimes transforms them into a drawing. The mechanical parts of the sculpture are openly presented, but still surprise through small movements that feel unexpectedly human. After first being shown at the Ångström Laboratory, the work is now on display for the first time at Uppsala Art Museum.

About the project

The artwork was created as part of an artistic design assignment for the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University, initiated by the Swedish Arts Council in collaboration with curator Björn Norberg and Akademiska Hus. Together with students and teachers at the laboratory, Bradford developed a drawing robot that uses a local AI model to interpret its surroundings and communicate through images. Technology, emotion and artistic intuition come together in a process that moves between control and improvisation.
