Stiina Saaristo is born in 1976, lives and works in Helsinki. Saaristo's large drawings are filled with recognizable details from life, but everything here is elevated to the next level, to the hilarious, burlesque and surreal. Saaristo uses herself as a model, but creates a figure that is not herself, but instead plays a role in a complex setting among other figures and symbols. The technique of the works is impeccable and the format of the images are overwhelming.

The large images are at once both enticing and grotesque in the encounter between the beautiful and the ugly. The female figures we come across in the images are central and brashly assert themselves, but they also bear an innocent expression, and are by no means unpleasant. In fact, one can rather experience a common feeling of surprise. There is also a strain of grotesque humor that is closely linked with empathy. Humanity is a common weakness and a deficiency. It is impossible to not be moved by Saaristo's fantastic pictorial world.


Vuonna 1976 syntynyt Stiina Saaristo asuu ja työskentelee Helsingissä. Saariston suuriin piirroksiin  ja maalauksiin sisältyy runsaasti elämän yksityiskohtien tunnistamista. Taideteosten kokonaisuutta on vahvistettu ylimääräisillä kierroksilla, ja niinpä lopputuloksen hahmosta tuleekin hullunkurinen, irvokas ja surrealistinen. Saaristo käyttää itseään mallina luomalla hahmon, joka kuitenkaan ei ole hän itse, vaan osa monimutkaista ympäristöä eri vertauskuvien ja hahmojen joukossa. Taideteosten tekniikka on virheetöntä ja kuvien koko mahtavaa. 

Suuret kuvat, joissa kaunis ja ruma kohtaavat toisensa, ovat samalla kertaa sekä lumoavia että groteskeja. Kuvien naishahmot ovat olennaisia ja tilaavieviä. Niistä huokuu viattomuus, eivätkä ne ole lainkaan epämukavia. Pikemminkin katsoja kokee yhteistä yllättyneisyyttä. Kuvien groteskiin huumoriin liittyy läheisesti empatiaa. Inhimillisyys on sekä yhteinen heikkous että puute.  Saariston suurenmoinen kuvamaailma vaikuttaa helposti katsojaan.
